We are helping people suffering from the war in Ukraine. Many people from Ukraine have fled to neighboring countries or to Germany, seeking support and protection. Various countries play a crucial role in receiving and coordinating aid measures for refugees.
Munich Helps Ukraine e.V. – MHU is a non-profit organization that supports war victims in Ukraine with in-kind donations. After the initial shock of the outbreak of war, it quickly became clear how crucial targeted in-kind donations and the collection of items such as clothing, socks, hygiene products, and supplies for women and children are to alleviate the suffering of those affected. MHU was founded in March 2022 by 108 dedicated founding members and originated from an initiative of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. To avoid misuse of donations, we regularly update needs lists to ensure the correct quantities of aid supplies and medications are collected. Every in-kind donation is carefully received and used to meet current needs. Since then, our organization has developed into an independent aid organization that works tirelessly for the people of Ukraine and for Ukrainian refugees. A key focus of our work is supporting patients and hospitals by providing medical and humanitarian aid. For us, humanitarian aid means delivering vital supplies—food, medical equipment, and warmth — directly to where they are most urgently needed. The work of our association and many volunteers includes organizing transport, collecting donations, and coordinating the distribution of aid supplies in Ukraine. The suffering and the impact of the war in Ukraine on the country and its people are immense, which is why our association’s work focuses on humanitarian aid. There is nothing that could justify the attack on Ukraine. Our members and supporters demonstrate a strong willingness to help and contribute in various ways – whether through donations, volunteering, or organizing relief efforts. We also play a vital role in organizing aid transports and providing on-the-ground support by identifying needs, coordinating volunteer efforts, and fundraising. Using donations responsibly and working with German-speaking volunteers are among the best ways to provide targeted assistance. The German language is often a key to facilitating communication with refugees and avoiding misunderstandings. We support men, women, and families in Ukraine with targeted assistance, ensuring we are close to those in need. Supporting each family is particularly important to us, as it fosters cohesion and stability during difficult times. Munich Helps Ukraine e.V. regularly distributes food parcels and medical supplies to facilities in the worst-affected regions of Ukraine. Hygiene products such as soap, toothpaste, and toilet paper are crucial to the health of Ukraine’s population. A shortage of hygiene products can lead to illness and a general health crisis in Ukraine, which is why their provision is a priority.
Our top priority is to support the people of Ukraine through targeted assistance and emergency aid. We are committed to ensuring that vital supplies such as food and medicine reliably reach the places where they are most urgently needed. We are particularly focused on families and children who have been plunged into acute hardship by the war. Through our work, we aim not only to ensure survival but also to convey hope and solidarity. Our goal is to improve the living conditions of the people of Ukraine sustainably and to stand by them during this difficult time.

Our focus is on supporting hospitals by providing medical equipment, medications, and ambulances. The collection of in-kind donations and the targeted distribution of aid supplies are always based on current needs lists to avoid misallocations and ensure that actual needs on the ground are met. In addition, we supply orphanages, nursing homes, and families with essential goods, including generators, food, water, and clothing. During the winter, heaters and warm clothing are crucial for surviving the cold temperatures in Ukraine. Medications are a critical item on our list of in-kind donation needs. When organizing the transport and distribution of aid supplies, we pay particular attention to ensuring the correct quantities so that aid arrives efficiently and according to need. The involvement of volunteers and partner organizations is essential for the collection, transport, and distribution of aid supplies to hospitals and other facilities.
To date, we have delivered more than 3,000 tons of humanitarian aid to Ukraine, a milestone made possible only through the generous support of individuals and organizations. To ensure our assistance reaches those who need it most, MHU works directly with reliable partner organizations in Ukraine. Most of our aid has been provided in Kherson, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Dnipro, and Zaporizhzhia. Transparency and donation tracking are crucial aspects of our donation process. Numerous collection points and transportation options are available to bring in-kind donations to Ukraine.

The safety of the people of Ukraine is of paramount importance to us. We are committed to providing safe accommodation and targeted support to those affected by the war. A key part of our aid efforts is supporting projects focused on mine clearance and the disposal of explosive devices to protect lives and infrastructure in the affected regions. Through these measures, we aim to contribute to a safer future for the people of Ukraine and to a sustainable improvement in their living conditions.
This comprehensive assistance is only possible thanks to more than 2,300 dedicated volunteers. Their willingness to help and the diverse ways they can contribute – from organizing transport and collecting relief supplies to supporting refugees – are central to our work for Ukraine. An essential aspect of this is also supporting the search for accommodation for refugees, for example, by providing addresses, sleeping places, and private accommodations in cooperation with municipalities, organizations like MHU, and committed individuals. We have received both in-kind and monetary donations from Germany, Europe, and around the world, which enable us to provide assistance where it is most needed. Volunteering is important and enriching, but it can also be demanding. Volunteers can get involved with Caritas and receive support for their on-the-ground activities.
Those interested can get involved in various ways, whether through monetary or in-kind donations, voluntary work, or support for specific projects – every form of involvement is welcome. It helps alleviate the suffering of people in Ukraine.
